Are you a diver? If so, let TMI Tours coordinate an underwater adventure for you. We can arrange for you to join local divers who will guide you in exploring the wreckage of two classic lake steamers that rest beneath the waters of Lake Coeur d’Alene. These guided tours will take you to the site of the Georgie Oaks, a sternwheeler that had a 100-ton capacity and carried both passengers and freight on the lake until 1917. You can also explore the wreckage of The Idaho, one of the largest steamers on the lake with twin side wheels and a capacity of 1,000 passengers. It was 147 feet long and owned by the Coeur d’Alene & St. Joe Transportation Company (later renamed the Red Collar Line). In 1915 the ship caught fire and sank in Blackrock Bay. One of its big paddle wheels is on display at the Museum of North Idaho (not far from the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Building).

Summer is in full swing here in the Pacific Northwest and Cruise West’s remarkable ship, the “Spirit of ‘98″, is making her weekly voyages on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Having driven the highways along the Columbia River Gorge, I can attest to the dramatic, awe-inspiring scenery that opens in front of you. But to really get a feel for the pulse of life along this waterway and to experience the immensity of the Columbia River Gorge, there is nothing like seeing it from the surface of the river it’s self.

With it’s old fashioned smokestacks and victorian-style decor, the Spirit of ‘98 resembles the steamships that once plied the rivers of North America. Adorned with ornate, carved wooden cabinety, floral upholstery, a Grand Salon and a full bar exuding Old-World charm, you will feel you are being transported aboard an early 20th century steamer. If you are looking for an amazing outdoor experience, try an R.V. or tent-camping vacation to beautiful Farragut State Park.  Located 30 miles north of Coeur d’Alene, this 4,000 acre gem is situated on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho’s largest lake.  Farragut offers the traditional recreational opportunities of picnicing, boating, swimming, hiking, and camping and has some unique activities such as disc golf, a model airplane flying field, the Naval Training Center museum and an orienteering course. Silverwood Theme Park and Boulder Beach Water Park are only 7 short miles away.

First stop must be the visitors center where you can pick up trail maps, travel guides, campground information and registration.  There are natural history and park displays as well as a gift shop with souvenir items and snacks.

Farragut offers over 40 miles of hiking and mountain bike trails.  Try hiking the Highpoint trail to Scout trail and up Bernard Peak to look back across the lake at the park.  Bernard Peak is famous for viewing mountain goats that live on it’s rocky face.

Visit the Museum at the Brig and meet Mack, the “rite of passage” artwork located in Memorial Plaza.  This museum houses the U.S. Farragut Naval Training Station’s collection of memorabilia including two restored vehicles on display in the courtyard.

Play the 18 hole Wreckreator or North Star professional level disc golf courses or the Whole Nine Yards course offering 9 holes for beginners and young children.

The model airplane flying field is usually buzzing with kids and adults flying remote planes and helicopters.

Swimming anywhere along the shoreline of Lake Pend Oreille is refreshing, but the Beaver Bay Beach offers a unique horseshoe- shaped protected beach and swimming area perfect for younger children.
